WALLA WALLA - Whitman College sophomore Katie Zajicek, who snared medalist honors in leading the women's golf team to a big win at its own invitational, has been named a Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week.

Zajicek, a team captain, fired a 2-over par 74 in Saturday's opening round at Veterans Memorial as Whitman carded a 313 team score, moving 15 strokes in front of its nearest competitor.

Sunday's closing round was played at Wine Valley Golf Course, and Zajicek again topped the field, shooting a 3-over 75.

Zajicek captured medalist honors by seven strokes and paced Whitman to a 25-stroke victory in the team scoring. Her 36-hole 149 total set a new individual school record for a two-round tournament.

The Whitman women's team returns to action Oct. 14 with a one-day event at Heron Lakes in Portland.
