Pioneers start slow, can't gain ground against Baker Bulldogs

MILTON-FREEWATER - The Pioneers fell to 0-4 Thursday after Greater Oregon League foe Baker beat Mac-Hi in three, 25-22, 25-12 and 25-22.

Mac-Hi coach Kaila Rodighiero said she wanted to see her team do better against the Bulldogs after the Pioneers played poorly earlier in Baker.

"When we went to Baker we just played so timid," she said. "So I just wanted to see them make a little bit of a comeback in this game."

Unfortunately, the Pioneers started slow and could not fully recover.

"I wasn't sure what was going on because the intensity was there," Rodighiero said. "We just couldn't get a side out.

"We fell really far behind and then my girls just started to scrap and come back, but we were just too far behind," she said.

Avery Wells was 11-of-12 in service and recorded and ace and three kills to lead the Pioneers in the loss. Mackenzie Fite was 14-for-14 from the back line with an ace. Megan Reed and Haley Freske both had two kills.

The Pioneers will compete in the Dig Pink tournament at Stanfield Saturday and will host La Grande Tuesday at home.
