WALLA WALLA - Whitman College biology professor Paul Yancey has been awarded a $93,891 research grant by the National Science Foundation.

The short title of his grant is Project Hades, for Hadal Ecosystem Study, and his work will focus on surveying the deepest ocean trench habitats around the Kermadec and Mariana islands, according to a college newsletter.

Yancey and his students will collaborate with the University of Hawaii and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. They will use a new robotic submarine, said to be the world's only submarine capable of traveling to such depths. The team hopes to uncover many new species of animals and microbes in the ocean's largely unexplored tectonic trenches.
