Wa-Hi girl's soccer beats Chiawana 4-1

WALLA WALLA - The Wa-Hi Blue Devils girls soccer team beat the Chiawana Riverhawks 4-1 Saturday, exacting revenge for a loss to the Riverhawks earlier in the season.

"They beat us over there and I think they were confident that they would beat us again." Devils coach Jesse Cruz said, "It gave us motivation to play great and we did."

The win improves Wa-Hi to 2-5 in Columbia Basin Big Nine play.

Brigit Lyons, Angelica Escalante, Maggie Callan and Paige Pontarolo each scored one goal apiece for the Blue Devils win. Lyons also contributed an assist and Pontarolo had two assists.

The Blue Devils' goalie Alexis Sanchez had four saves.

Cruz complimented the team win and emphasized that everyone on the team did their part and was important.

Cruz was also happy to get everyone in the game against Chiawana, as he wanted to make sure everyone could play.

The goals and the league victory encouraged Cruz that his team is starting to turn a corner.

"I hope we can continue to play at the same fast pace as today and that we are able to realize some of the goals for the season that have been set previously." Cruz said,

Wa-Hi plays again at home against Richland Tuesday at 4 p.m.
