Weston-McEwen makes it to the semifinals of the Power Tournament before falling to Heppner

ATHENA - Weston-McEwen raced into the semifinals here Saturday at its own volleyball Power Tournament.

The TigerScots raced through pool play with 3-0 wins over Elgin and Grant Union, which advanced the TigerScots to bracket play.

WM defeated Union 25-17, 25-17 to earn a spot in the semifinals against league foe Heppner.

The TigerScots, who already own a league win over Heppner, defeated the Mustangs 25-14 in the first set, but Heppner bounced back to win the next two sets with 25-16 and 15-11 wins.

Heppner advanced to the championship, but dropped the match to Ione. Ione remained undefeated on the season in winning the Power Tournament.

Morgan Entze led the TigerScots on the day with 28 digs, 78 assists, and 22 kills. Molly von Borstel contributed 39 digs, 47 kills, and was a perfect 31-of-31 from the serving line.

Taylor Rudolph had 20 digs and seven kills, Katy West added 13 blocks to go with 26 kills, and Marlene Bodmer chipped in 12 kills.

Melanie Sederburg stepped up for the TigerScots with 26 assists, 10 kills, and seven blocks.

"We found out on Friday that we would be missing a setter," W-M coach Shawn White said. "We needed another setter and Melanie stepped in and did a nice job."

McKayla Carlin led the TigerScot defenders with 62 digs, and was 51-of-52 serving. Jaymie Zimmerman had 10 serving aces on the day, and McKenzie Fuhrman added five serving aces. Dani Dearing rounded out the TigerScot stat leaders with 17 digs and four aces.

"Union, Heppner, and Elgin are all chasing us in our league," White said of the tournament. "The competition helps us grow and get better that's what's important."

Weston-McEwen stands a perfect 7-0 in Blue Mountain Conference play, and drops to 16-5 overall. The TigerScots open the second round of conference action when Enterprise visits Thursday.
