Man arrested after injury hit-and-run

WALLA WALLA -- A man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly running from an injury wreck he caused at First Avenue and Birch Street late the previous night, officials said.

Rozas Alaniz Jr., 20, of 524 E. Cherry St., is suspected of driving a vehicle east on Birch about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, failing to stop at a stop sign and colliding with another vehicle.

Alaniz then allegedly fled on foot, as did his passenger.

Rubio D. Jiminez, who was driving the other vehicle, was trapped and disoriented, according to a police report presented in Superior Court this morning.

Paramedics were able to remove Jiminez, 20, and take him to Providence St. Mary Medical Center for treatment. His passenger, John A. Nibler, 20, stayed at the scene, but went to Providence St. Mary's emergency room later to be treated, the report says.

A third victim, Coleman D. Cantrell, 17, also checked into the hospital's ER. He reportedly told police he was the passenger in the vehicle from which the driver fled, and that Alaniz was that driver.

All three victims of the collision were treated and released, according to a hospital nursing supervisor.

Alaniz was located about 7:50 a.m. Sunday at a residence in the 600 block of West Poplar Street and arrested.

He was booked into the County Jail on investigation of hit-and-run with injury and first-degree driving while his license had been suspended or revoked.

Bail was set this morning at $50,000.
