Irish hand Panthers 34-7 SE2B thrashing

DeSales overcomes a scoreless first quarter to down Asotin Friday night.

ASOTIN - After a scoreless first quarter, DeSales scored 14 points in both the next periods to down Asotin, 34-7, in a Southeast 2B matchup here Friday night.

Nike Wales scored on an eight-yard run to open scoring in the second quarter, and punched it in from the 2 for the Irish's third touchdown.

Jeremiah Cox found Joe Duehn and Andrew Elmenhurst for 26-yard scoring strikes, and Luke Fazzari had DeSales' other touchdown, an eight-yard run.

Fazzari finished with 114 yards on the ground, while Cox completed 15 of 21 passes for 160 yards.

"It was a great road win for us," Irish coach Pat Graham said. "We were able to get some three-and-outs on defense and our offense was able to capitalize on the field position.

"We were very efficient on offense," he said. "We stayed balanced on offense and were able to mix the pass and run."

The Irish, who put up 199 yards on the ground and 185 through the air, limited the Panthers to 47 yards on 18 carries, and 107 yards passing.

"I was proud of our defense tonight," Graham said. "We really stepped up and stopped the run all night. We had a couple breakdowns right before halftime. But we were able to keep their offense in check most of the night."

One sore spot for DeSales was flags. The Irish were penalized 12 times for 95 yards in the game.

"We definitely need to work on the penalties," Graham said. "This was the first game that we've struggled with that. It put us in a hole at times, but we'll fix those issues this week."

DeSales, now 2-1 in SE2B play and 4-2 overall, hosts Dayton's Bulldogs Friday. Dayton, a 26-6 victor over Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia Friday, and the Irish have identical records.

"Dayton has been playing well this year," Graham said. "We are going to need another good week of preparation. It will be nice to play at home. We have only had two home games through the first seven weeks of the season."
