Pomeroy pulls away from Vikings

The Pirates break open a close first-quarter score to win the SE1B game, 64-22, over Garfield-Palouse.

PALOUSE - Garfield-Palouse used Riley Hodges' two first-quarter touchdown runs to keep up with Pomeroy here Friday night, but the Pirates outscored the Vikings 18-0 in the second quarter to distance themselves and roll to a 64-22 Southeast 1B victory.

The Pirates sit in a second-place tie with Colton in the SE1B, both a 3-1, behind undefeated Touchet.

Austin Reisdorph had 173 rushing yards, Ryan Smith had 157 and Tory Knebel 145 as Pomeroy racked up 556 yards on the ground.

Gar-Pal's productive first quarter had no effect on the Pirates.

"They got the ball first, and they didn't have too much difficulty driving in for the first score," Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates said. "Once that happened, our defense got stronger. The second score was on missed (Pirate) tackles.

"After that, the kids played well," he said. "They were aggressive. The front four on both offense and defense controled the line of scrimmage, and that showed in our running game."

Reisdorph got loose for touchdown runs of 20, 63 and 30 yards.

The Vikings keyed on Knebel, who still had a 66-yard TD scamper, which opened the door for Pirate quarterback Smith to take it in from 70 and 44 yards.

"We have three people in the backfield (Reisdorph, Smith and Knebel) with some speed," Bates said. "Our line give them a crease, any one of them can take advantage of it."

Jacob Moore had a 50-yard interception return for a score, and also had a 70-yard touchdown run.

Hodges' first-quarter TD runs were the only threat to the Pirates. Hodges ended up with 147 yards for Gar-Pal.

"There were a couple times he broke away," Bates said of Hodges. "But he wasn't a problem overall."

"I was pleased with the kids," he said. "We're improving every week, and they had a great game. It's back to work Monday to see if we can't keep it going."

Pomeroy, 3-1 in league and 5-1 overall, celebrates homecoming against Liberty Christian Friday.
