Sept. 17, 1923 - Oct. 4, 2011
Our loving mother and friend Susan Haas Merriam passed away Oct. 4, 2011, at her home in Glendora, Calif. She was 88. A long-time resident of Southern California, Susan was born "Eleanor" Susan Haas to Viola Haas on Sept 17, 1923, in Aberdeen, Wash.
Adopted at birth by Edward and Marie Haas, Susan grew up in Walla Walla and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1941. She attended Reed College in Portland, Ore., and the University of Washington in Seattle.
She was a pilot in the Women's Air Corps and worked for the State Department as a logistics planner for the routing and dispatch of military supplies by rail to support the U.S. war efforts during World War II.
She was an accountant in the publishing industry for many years until her retirement in 1988. Her passion for classical piano (Brahms and Handel were favorites) inspired us. She was a accomplished pianist. Her gourmet cooking brought us delicious joy.
A lifelong Christian Scientist, Susan's faith was both the strength and testament in her ability to overcome life's many challenges. Susan was preceded in death by her twin sister, Elaine Bloom, in 1988.
Susan is survived by her sons, Troy, Jason and Paris Merriam; brother, Melvin Haas; sister in-law, Loleta Haas; grandchildren, Jesse and Katy Merriam; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Jane Merriam; and seven nieces and nephews.
We will deeply miss your loving, gentle and soft-spoken voice. Your grace touched many lives. We are comforted in knowing your presence on Earth made the world a better place for all humanity. Your unconditional love will forever be our strength and in our hearts. You are now free as a bird to soar high above the clouds... Until we meet again dear Susan.
