Walla Walla Symphony's Youth Orchestra gains Jeremy Mims as director/conductor

WALLA WALLA -- The Walla Walla Symphony announced its Youth Orchestra program will begin the 2011-2012 season later this month under new artistic leadership.

Jeremy Mims, Ph.D., a professor of music at Whitman College, will assume the position of music director and conductor for the Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra and will lead the young ensemble in its first performance as part of the annual Feast of Carols on Dec. 4 at Cordiner Hall.

The Youth Orchestra will rehearse on Monday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. in Walla Walla.

Auditions are required for membership and there is a $50 tuition fee for the season, with financial aid available through the Symphony.

Membership is open to any young instrumentalist currently in grades 8-12 and auditions will be held at the Whitman College Music Building on Saturday, from 4-7 p.m. and Sunday, from 1-4 p.m.

Students should prepare a short solo selection and will be asked to sight-read.
