YAKIMA - Waitsburg-Prescott spotted Riverside Christian an early goal, then settled down and dominated the rest of the way in a 9-2 romp in Class 2B co-ed soccer action here Saturday.
W-P improved its league record to 9-0-2 and is now 11-1-2 overall.
Francisco Gonzalez led the way with four goals and Lino Diaz added a hat trick. Kevin Ortega dished out four assists for W-P.
Gonzalez scored the equalizer off a Diaz assist at 18:41 and Diaz gave Waitsburg-Prescott a 2-1 edge, assisted by Ernesto Valdovinos, at the 21:43 mark.
Ortega set up Gonzalez for his second goal of the match at 31:42, a boot that put W-P in front, 3-1, and assisted on a goal by Jesse Albarran at 34:30.
W-P led 4-1 at halftime.
Albarran struck again at 42:37 after being set up by Alvair Escalante and Gonzalez tallied his third goal of the contest at 45:12 to give W-P a 6-1 lead.
Diaz and Gonzalez scored at 64:25 and 70:23, respectively, both assisted by Ortega, and Diaz picked up W-P's final goal of the match, off a Gonzalez assist, at 76:25.
RC scored the last goal of the match just before the final whistle.
"We let them score early, then our defense clamped down after that," W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said.
W-P plays for the league title Monday when it travels to Walla Walla Valley Academy for a 4 p.m. matchup.
