WALLA WALLA - DeSales defeated Walla Walla Valley Academy in three sets Tuesday, downing the Knights in three sets 25-20, 25-14 and 25-18.
The Irish, 12-3 in Southeast 2B play, plays a final match at Riverside Thursday. DeSales tied Asotin for second in the league, but a lower draws leaves the Irish with the third seed to the District tournament. They travel to Asotin to open District play next Wednesday.
"Our goals tonight offensively were to step it up and find some good control in the middle and outside hitters, as well," DeSales coach Lori Blanc said. "The other goal was to stay focused and in control of the match from start to finish, and I think they accomplished that."
Abby Larreau recorded 10 kills, five blocks and was 15-for-15 serving for the Irish.
Annie Higgins had 10 kills, Stephanie Ferrel had eight kills and 26 digs, Claire Conley four kills, Chantel Blanc had 29 assists and was 10-for-10 serving, and Bethany Konen was 4-for-4 serving.
The loss moved the Knights to 3-9 in Southeast 2B play and was the final match WWVA will play this season.
"It's kind of the way our season's been going," WWVA coach Scott Schafer said. "We're really young. We had three girls out, so there were some new girls who got to see time. That was good for them to see that level of competition."
That youth should play into WWVA's favor next year as starters Hannah Woolever and Amy Arnzen, both sophomores, will return to see more action.
Kristiana Buell and Brooklyn Larson, both setters, will be lost to graduation.
"I know we're gong to be a lot stronger next year," Schafer said. "This season was just kind of one of those seasons where you just have to push through and do what you can - next season we should be much better."
Arnzen led WWVA in kills, scoring seven. Woolever had four blocks. Larson contributed nine assists in the loss.
Amanda Birney went 11-for-11 in service.
