Pioneer boys shut out La Grande, improve to 7-1 in GOL play

LA GRANDE - Mac-Hi's boys soccer team beat La Grande 3-0 Tuesday, improving to 7-1 in Greater Oregon League play.

Jaun Pablo Martinez scored the lone goal of the first half, bringing the ball up the pitch himself and then making a final cut at the goal line and sending the ball in.

Jaime Torres took a left-footed shot from 30 yards out for the first goal of the second half. Christian Zaragoza finished the scoring with a shot from 25 yards out to seal the victory over the one-win La Grande.

The team lost star sweeper Alberto Garcia to injury Friday when it faced the Tigers, but the team responded well, Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said.

"The guys did an amazing job yesterday," Garcia said. "Mentally it can be hard when a team loses a good player, but they got tough and did really well. I'm very proud of them."

Garcia said Luis Saldana filled in well for Alberto Garcia.

The Pioneers will face Ontario Saturday at 3 p.m. in their final league match up and will have an out of league game against Riverside before the GOL play-in on Nov. 5.
