Longtime Walla Walla County resident Harold Mitchell, 96, passed away Oct. 25, 2011.
Viewing and visitation will be Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla. The graveside service will be Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens, 300 S.E. Myra Road, with Jerry Quaresma, nephew of Harold officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shriner's Hospital in Spokane or charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Bradshaw, Neb., on Feb. 3, 1915, to Chester and Laura Mitchell. After graduating high school, he found his way to the Northwest during the Depression and World War II. He settled in the Waitsburg area in 1936. In 1957, he married Josephine (Jo) and her family of three; within a year, Jim's birth made it a complete six-pack.
He enjoyed being involved with various local organizations. He was honored to be selected as Waitsburg parade marshal. In addition, he was often an important part of family gatherings with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Harold is survived by a sister, Rosana Quaresma; daughter, Linda DeRuwe and husband Tim of Touchet; son, Don Lytle and wife Terry of Helena, Mont.; son, James Mitchell of Waitsburg; two daughters by marriage, Betty Hofer of Waitsburg and Diana Patrick of Hingham, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; one son, Winton (Dudley) Lytle; and one grandson, Lenny Lytle.
