W-P's Deal wins District title


CLARKSTON - Tri-Cities Prep's boys took first and Waitsburg-Prescott's Seth Deal advanced to the Washington State Championship after placing first in the Southeast 2B District 9 Championship cross country meet here Thursday afternoon.

T-C Prep, Asotin and Pomeroy advanced to state as teams. W-P's sophomore E.J. Meserve also advanced to state with a 17-minute ,12-second three mile for 11th place and Pomeroy's Bryan McGreevy advanced with an 18:20 time, good for 14th place.

Deal ran the course in 15:30, beating his nearest competitor by four seconds and besting his previous time of 15:43 on the same course, ran in September.

Meserve saw tremendous improvement, cutting almost a full minute from the 18:10 he posted earlier.

W-P's Trent Hafen just missed the cut for state - the top 15 runners advanced - at 18th with a 19:20.

All three W-P runners were recovering from injuries; Deal from an Achilles heel injury and Hafen from a pulled muscle.

Pomeroy's Riley Bott took 19th overall and second for the Pirates with a 19:20. Colsen Mayfield took 21st at 20:22, Stevie Fletcher took 23rd at 20:49, Michael Wade to 27th with a 21:28 and Tyler King took 28th with a 21:32 to round out the Pomeroy runners.

Dayton's Micah Yeater was the lone runner for the Bulldogs, taking 24th at 20:49.

Walla Walla Valley Academy had one runner, freshman Ryan Hepker, who finished 32nd at 25:33.

Asotin, Reardan and T-C Prep advanced for the girls, with Morgan Wilson of Colfax taking first overall. WWVA's Jessica Arnzen was the only local runner to advance to state, finishing 15th at 21:33. Teammates McKenzie Cosaert took 20th at 21:47 and Christine Lomeland took 45th at 24:34.

Dayton's lone girl was Samura Miller. She finished at 25:27, good for 49th.

Pomeroy's Kelcey Gerking took first for the Pirates but 57th overall at 28:33. She was followed by Teresa Meyers at 28:39 and Alley Bott, also at 28:39. Shelby Fuchs finished at 28:54 and Elizabeth finished at 36:06 for the Pirates.

The Pomeroy boys, Deal and Meserve will run in the state championship Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Sun Willows golf course in Pasco.

Deal will be shooting for first at state after finishing fourth last year at state.
