Bulldogs run to 35-14 win over Panthers

Dayton takes the third seed from the SE2B District 9 into next week's crossover at Ritzville with the victory.

ASOTIN - Dayton secured the third seed out of Southeast 2B District 9 with a 34-22 victory over Asotin that wasn't as close as the final score.

The Bulldogs raced to a 19-0 lead, and was up 35-14 late in the game before the Panthers got loose for a 68-yard scoring run against Dayton's second-team defense.

"We played pretty good last night," Bulldogs coach Dean Bickelhaupt said. "We got in the red zone a couple times and didn't punch it in. But it's nice to get that win, it's always tough to play in Asotin. We started out taking it to them pretty quick. I was pretty satisfied with the game except to the red zone."

Dayton opened the night with a halfback pass from Hayden Fullerton to Wyatt Frame for a 10-yard touchdown.

Bulldog quarterback followed that with an 18-yard run to put Dayton up 13-0 in the first quarter.

Isaiah Lambert had a 12-yard scamper to make it 19-0 at the break.

The Panthers got on the board when Grant Parsons picked up a Dayton fumble and returned it 50 yards for the touchdown, but Lambert answered with a 17-yard run to make it 25-8.

Asotin quarterback Parsons then hit Nate Dalton for a 2-yard scoring pass to pull the Panthers within 25-14.

Logan Hays then recorded a Dayton safety, and Bickelhaupt took an interception back 12 yards for the Bulldogs' final score before Asotin's tally against they Dayton backups.

"The kids played hard, everybody stepped up," coach Bickelhaupt said. "We took it to them on the ground, that's why we didn't pass too much. Our ground game was working, so we just stayed with it. Colton at quarterback, and Hayden and Isaiah at running back, they all ran the ball really well."

Bickelhaupt finished with 56 yards rushing, Fullerton had 99 and Lambert piled up 143 for the Bulldogs.

Coach Bickelhaupt also applauded the Dayton offensive line.

"Alex Naylor, Kroft Sunderland, Andrew Mendoza, Logan Hays and Chris Conley - those guys did a good job," he said. "And Joey Schlacter at tight end, he did a great job, too. I was pleased with what our front line guys did.

"I was pretty pleased with our defense," coach Bickelhaupt said. "I don't think we gave up more than 100 yards with our first-string defense."

Dayton, now 3-2 in SE2B play and 5-3 overall, now travel to Ritzville for a crossover game at 7 p.m. Friday.

"I know they run a multiple offense like us," Bickelhaupt said. "They mix the run and the pass."
