Jeanne Alkins

Jeanne D. Alkins, 89, a 53-year resident of Walla Walla, died Aug. 27, 2011, at home surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Galveston, Texas, the daughter of Travis and Marguerite Dozier, she was a graduate of Ball High School, Galveston, and attended Texas Women's College. A lifelong Episcopalian, she served as director of Christian education at Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, where she met her future husband.

She served as a secretary at Yale University while her husband was attending seminary, and for more than 25 years as a secretary at Whitman College Library until her retirement.

A quiet, self-effacing Southern lady, her life centered around her church, her children and grandchildren and her pets.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Gehling of Walla Walla; two sons, Peter and John Alkins of Olympia; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Walla Walla, on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011,
at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center. Arrangements will be made through Herring Groseclose Funeral Home.
