July 6, 1939 - Aug. 26, 2011
Janet Grindstaff of Milton-Freewater passed away Aug. 26, 2011, at her home at the age of 72 years.
Private graveside services were held Aug. 30, 2011, in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
Janet was born July 6, 1939, in Mikkelson Township in North Dakota, the second oldest of four daughters. As a young woman, she worked as a telephone operator in Jamestown, N.D., connecting calls through a switchboard. In 1958, she married Merrel Larson in LaMoure, N.D. They later moved to Hermiston, Ore., and Huntington Beach, Calif. In 1964, they moved to Milton-Freewater, where they raised their two daughters.
Janet invested her heart and soul in being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a room-mother for her daughters' school classrooms, and their friends loved to spend time at their home, enjoying her home-baked treats. Friends and family couldn't wait for Christmas for her fudge and divinity.
If Janet had chosen to work outside the home, she might have been an interior decorator. She spent years collecting treasures of all shapes and sizes and displaying them in stunning combinations. A visiting Hospice nurse entering her home said she felt like she was walking into a beautiful gift shop.
"Grandma Jan" was always up for something fun, from teaching one granddaughter how to wave like a princess, to dressing up another and her dog as Little Bo Peep and her sheep for the Kiddie Parade. She even went down the big blue slide at the Milton-Freewater swimming pool with grandkids, even though she was afraid of both heights and the water and couldn't swim.
Janet's husband Merrel died in 1986. In 1999, she married Terry Grindstaff, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They enjoyed visits to the river and time spent on their backyard deck.
She is survived by her husband, Terry at the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Lori Larson and Lana and Robert Brown, all of Milton-Freewater; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Christopher Brown, and Jordan, Sierra and Taylor Brummett; two sisters, and step-son and step-daughter, Robert Grindstaff and Shannon Byerley. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; and three brothers-in-law.
