DUFUR, Ore. - Pomeroy overcame Mohawk's fast start, scored 30 third-quarter points and went home with a 50-12 season-opening football victory here Friday.
"We had size on them," Pirates coach Sanford Bates said. "They had some speed, and in that first quarter they utuilzed that speed on the outside for two early scores. But our kids hung in there, made some adjustments and aclimated to their speed."
Mohawk scored on an early 46-yard run, and controlled the ball most of the first quarter.
Pomeroy had one play in the first stanza, but made it count as running back Tory Knebel got loose for a 60-yard touchdown to put the Pirates up 8-6.
Mohawk scored its second touchdown on an 8-yard run to hold a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Pirates shut the Indians out from there.
"We had a goal-line stand just before halftime, and that gave us momentum going into halftime," Bates said. "The kids were hanging in there, not giving up. They just got stronger in the second half.
"In the third quarter they did a great job."
Knebel followed his 29-yard scamper in the second quarter, which left the Pirates with a 14-12 halftime edge, with third-quarter touchdown runs of 49 and 46 yards.
Austin Reisdorph got into the action with 34- and 48-yard scoring runs of his own to open Pomeroy's lead to 44-12 heading into the final quarter.
"Tory had a great season for us last year, and he's continuing that this year," Bates said of Knebel's 199 yards on eight carries. "You give him a little crease, and once he's through the secondary he has the speed to get to the end zone."
Reisdorph finished with 125 yards on eight carries.
Pomeroy finished with 437 total yards on 34 rushes.
Brendan Lueck closed Pomeroy's scoring with a 16-yard scoring dash in the fourth quarter.
Junior quarterback Ryan Smith completed 2-of-4 passes for 15 yards.
"He's leading the team, and we expect he'll carry the ball a third of the time, as well," Bates said of the QB.
"We had a little slow start, but they didn't panic and that's a good sign," he said. "They adjusted and took care of business."
Pomeroy has a bye this week before hosting Cove at 7 p.m. Sept. 16.
