Arthur O. "Art" Mercer, Milton-Freewater, passed away Aug. 31, 2011, near Weston at the age of 71 years. Memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1113 Lamb St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Mr. Mercer was born Sept. 24, 1939, in Enterprise, Ore., the son of Oscar A. and Roberta M. Badgett Mercer. The family moved to Richland when he was a child. He attended school there. While living in Richland, he worked on the family ranch. The family later moved to Milton-Freewater. He owned and operated Art's Rainbow Gas Station on Highway 11. On Oct. 10, 1959, he married Margaret A. Titus in Reno, Nevada. The couple lived their entire married life in Milton-Freewater. Mr. Mercer was a manager and owner of many real estate parcels including home rentals and buildings. He enjoyed hiking in the Wallowa Mountains, Mill Creek, and the South Fork of the Walla Walla River.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Mercer, at the home; a son, Rick Mercer; a daughter, Diane Sheets; a sister, Sharon; his father, Oscar A. Mercer, all of Milton-Freewater, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
