DAYTON -- The cause of a early-morning fire at 1013 S. Third St. is under investigation, Dayton Fire Marshal Jeremy Phinney said this morning.
The fire, which damaged most of the roof of the home, was reported at 2:36 a.m. Firefighters from Columbia County Fire District 3, with assistance from the Waitsburg Fire Department responded.
The residents, a woman and two children, were at home when the fire started. The American Red Cross is assisting the family in finding housing, Phinney said.
Multiple roof layers and dropped ceilings hampered firefighters in extinguishing the fire, Phinney said. Besides the damaged roof there is smoke and water damage throughout the house.
