Weston-McEwen picks up volleyball wins; Helix swept


HELIX - Helix opened its volleyball season with three-set losses to visiting Riverside and Weston-McEwen here Thursday.

The Grizzlies fell to Riverside, 25-13, 25-21, 25-11, and then to the TigerScots, 25-11, 25-23, 25-9.

Weston-McEwen also handed Riverside a 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 defeat.

"We showed some improvement," TigerScots coach Shawn White said. "We've been working on hitting and being aggressive, and we still have some things to work on."

For W-M Morgan Entze had eight digs, 19 assists, 12 kills and 14 aces; Taryn Coffman picked up 16 assists; Molly von Borstel recorded 11 kills; Taylor Rudolph came up with three digs; Katie West had nine kills and four blocks; Marlene Badmer five kills; Jaymie Zimmerman nine aces; Melanie Sederburg three kills; McKayla Carlin 10 digs and seven aces; and Dani Dearing three kills and five digs.

"For the first matches of the season, the girls were a little nervous," Helix coach Tammie Parker said. "I think we learned a lot last night. We see where we need to go, and we'll go back to practice and work on the things we need to fix."

The Grizzlies head to the Riverside Tournament Saturday.

Weston-McEwen, now 2-2 on the season, travels to the Heppner Tournament to begin pool play at 9 a.m. Saturday.
