HERMISTON - The Waitsburg-Prescott cross country team put a strong showing in at the Brooks Runner Soul XC Fest Saturday, with junior Seth Deal sixth overall in the varsity 5k with a time 16 minutes 29 seconds.
More than 200 runners competed in the 5k, with Deal competing in a field of 96.
"I was pleased accross the board," coach Joanne Lanning said. "Everyone had a great performance today."
W-P only had 3 varsity runners in the meet, Trent Hafen and E.J. Meserve rounded out the boys attending for Waitsburg-Prescott.
This was Hafen's first 5k race, the freshman previously ran only 1.5 mile races in middle school. He finished 35th with a time of 18:29.
Meserve brought up the rear for W-P with a 21:16, but he had a good excuse - he was stung by a bee.
"He (Meserve) finished but was pretty bad shape," Lanning said. "He was numb and may be developing some allergies, but he was happy that he persevered and still set a personal record,"
Besides the errant bee, W-P also battled through some pretty tough heat, Lanning said they faced some high heat.
"The track was 98 degrees, it was horrendously hot," Lanning said. "It was the toughest conditions I've seen in my years, we even had a lot of humidity coming off the grass because it was so well watered."
W-P races Dayton Wednesday in a District 9 league meet and then travels to Clarkston for the Connell Invite Saturday.
