SPOKANE - Walla Walla Community College's volleyball team fared well, going 4-2, in the tournament held here Friday and Saturday against "very tough competition," WWCC coach Tim Toon said.
The top three teams ranked in the first NWAACC coaches' poll were present. North Idaho College and Central Arizona College were also among the pool of teams.
The Warriors' finish was good enough for second place in the tournament and an overall season record of 8-4.
WWCC opened the tournament by losing to Mount Hood, 25-19, 27-25, and 25-22.
Next the Warriors spun off two wins Friday against Highline and Treasure Valley 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-11 and 20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13.
The semifinal was a rematch against Highline, and WWCC was victorious once again by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-9.
The finals saw the Warriors lose in five games to Blue Mountain. The scores were 17-25, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12.
Three Warriors were named to the all-tournament team. Brittany Dominguez, Libby Kern and Kayla Hanus were given honors.
Dominguez was praised by Toon as "having the best match of her career against Blue Mountain."
Dominguez finished the tournament with 66 kills and 21 blocks.
Kern "scared other teams with her net play," Toon said.
Kern had 41 kills and 17 blocks in the six matches.
Hanus contribued a noteworthy 153 assists.
"As the tournament progressed," Toon said, "we got better and better! All 14 in uniform saw action and were now in a favorable position to win some league games."
WWCC hosts Yakima at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
