On the agenda - Garfield County Public Hospital District


Garfield County Public Hospital District commissioners are Jenness Evanson, Jim Maves, Ray Hoffman, and Vonni Mulroney. One seat is vacant. With all present Wednesday the board:

  • FOCUS GROUP: Discussed theme common with three groups.
  • TAX LEVY: Discussed maintenance and operations taxes, and how little the amount is compared to other special purpose districts in the county. The district will ask CPA whether pursuing a levy lid lift would be advantageous with the addition of the windmills.
  • LAB PRICING STUDY: Discussed issues revealed by a lab pricing study. Study recommendations included improved communication with patient regarding necessity of lab tests ordered and the possible financial impact if they are is not covered by insurance.
  • FIRE: Heard report by Fire Chief Kris Darby on the Bell Plain Complex Fire. Also reviewed the processes and activities of local, regional and state resources.
  • HUGS: Learned staff donated $108 to the HUGS Auxiliary.
  • RESIDENT COUNCIL: Resident council reported temperatures are comfortable and the Department of Health approved the tub/shower remodel.
  • FLU SHOTS: Learned flu shots will be available at the clinic but the serum has not been received. Cost will be the same as at the health district. The clinic will offer nasal spray and maximum strength serum for persons 65 and older.
  • CLINIC: Learned physician assistant Sonny Talbot begins work Sept. 19. Also learned Americorps community heath promoter Kate Forand is working on the healthy Home initiative.
  • FINANCE COMMITTEE: Learned variances in the budget are due to uncompensated care.
  • GRANTS: Learned the Critical Access Hospital Network was awarded a three-year $1 million grant to develop a regional care coordination system. A second grant for $17,400 was received from the USDA for the renovation of the tub and shower room of the long-term care facility.
  • CONTRACT: Approved contract with Leone and Keeble, Inc for tub room remodel for $51,991.
  • MEDICAL STAFF: Approved the following medical staff: Johathan Bold, MD and Christopher J. Ladner, MD, Virtual Radiologic; John Whitaker, MD and John Mannschreck, MD, Twin Cities Radiology, and Glenn Houser, MD, Garfield Countiy Hospital. Unanimous.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE: Heard reports on provider search, legislature, Washington State Hospital Association political action committee, and Pomeroy School District parent newsletter. Also on Small Rural Hospital Insurance trust board meeting, PSE wind power news, and American Hospital Association Quest for Quality.
