WALLA WALLA -- A Benton City man was arrested this morning after alledgedly pointing a loaded gun at a Walla Walla police officer.

Officers responded at 5:35 a.m. to a call of a man driving a motor home recklessly and waving a gun around in the 100 block of Bryant Avenue, according to Officer Tim Bennett, police spokesman.

One officer was confronted by the suspect while searching around the driveway where the motor home was parked. The suspect was seen crouching near the home's garage, pointing the pistol at an officer.

After police persuaded him to place his loaded and cocked handgun on the ground, Paul Anderson, 63, was arrested.

Anderson appeared to be hallucinating, claiming there were snipers on his motor home trying to kill him, Bennett said. "Something was causing his hallucination, we don't know what. Our biggest concern is his mental state."

Police could find no criminal history on Anderson, he added.

Anderson was lodged at the Walla Walla County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault. The investigation is continuing.
