UNION - The Mac-Hi boys varsity team took fourth overall at the Catherine Creek Scamper Friday, with senior Lucas Simpson leading the way for the Pioneers with a 12th-place finish out of 80 runners on the varsity course.
Simpson ran the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes and 42 seconds, which was not a personal record but was his best time on that particular course.
"Simpson is still running steady for us," coach John Milleson said. "It was a very technical course and even though it wasn't a (personal record), it was his best time ever at Catherin Creek."
Jesus Saldana was the second Pioneer to cross the line with a time of 19:20 in his first year at the varsity level.
There were only two girls running for Mac-Hi at the meet.
Freshman Josie Lanai took third overall with a time of 21:27.
"For a freshman she is doing really well," Milleson said. "Every time she gets on the course she is doing better and improving, she is doing really good for us."
Kristi Childers, also a freshman, took 29th with a 25:20, but she is new to long distance running, Milleson said.
"For a sprinter turned cross-country runner, she did an outstanding job for us," Milleson said.
The Pioneers travel to the Lewiston Invitational at the Hell's Gate State Park Friday.
"We had a great day," Milleson said. "We're coming together as a team, we're improving with our young guys and really moving up."
