WALLA WALLA - A possible explosive device discovered off Stateline Road by a jail inmate on work crew was exploded by bomb squad personnel on Thursday.
According to a Walla Walla County Sheriff's report, the discovery was made west of Burrows Road around 1:30 p.m. The device was a cylinder 4 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, wrapped in tape. It had a 12-15-inch fuse and was covered in dirt as if it had been left out for a long time, the report said.
The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad was called in and the device was exploded with a separate device.
No fragments were recovered.
The sheriff's report said, "It was impossible to tell whether or not it was truly an explosives device but was sure manufactured to look like it."
