SEATTLE - Wa-Hi's J.P. Wolpert placed fifth in the boys five-kilometer race during the Sundodger Invitational cross country meet at Lincoln Park here Saturday.
Wolpert finished the course in 15:23.09 to help the Blue Devils place ninth in a 24-team boys field.
Two other Wa-Hi boys cracked the top 40. Sean Newcomb was 29th (16:12.04) and Greggory Heller placed 40th (16:19.74).
A pair of Wa-Hi athletes finished in the top 25 during the girls 5K and led the Blue Devils to a seventh-place showing in the team standings. Rachel Nelson was seventh with a mark of 18:42.01 and Hannah Hampson finished 25th in 19:33.82.
"I was pleased with the overall performances of our runners," Wa-Hi coach Mike Locati said. "We had good performances by both our No. 1 runners. Our runners are running hard and it was great to see them extend themselves out there on a very fast course.
"We are moving forward on both the boys and girls squads, but we need to close some gaps between some runners," Locati said. "If we can do that, we will be much more competitive. We have a couple of weeks off to really go after the training before we head back to the Sunfair Invitational (in Yakima). It will be a good opportunity to see our progress."
