Betty Elizabeth Hess
October 17, 1919 - September 9, 2011

Betty Elizabeth Hess passed away peacefully at the Washington Odd
Fellows Home on September 9, 2011. She was born on October 17, 1919,
in Harlowton, Montana, to William and Nellie Brown. She moved with her
family to the Yakima Valley and Selah, Washington where she and her brother
and three sisters were raised. Betty graduated from Selah High School in
1938; married E.R. "Mike" Hess in 1939, and moved to Walla Walla in 1941 with their two children,
Robert and JoDee. She took bookkeeping classes and became a
bookkeeper for several years for the business she and her husband
owned for over 40 years, "Commercial Tire Service".
Betty was involved for 25 years with the American Red Cross and proudly received her 25-year pin for her service. She
belonged to the B.P.O.E. Lodge #287, V.F.W. Grant Farmer Post 992, Daughters of the Nile and with her husband enjoyed the
activities with the Shriners and Masonic organizations. She was a member of the Pioneer United Methodist Church for over 50
years.

Staying physically active was important to Betty. In her earlier years, she played a lot of golf, enjoyed water aerobics and
walking. She had a great sense of humor, loved playing cards and Yahtzee with her two grandsons, John, Jr. and Bill; playing Bingo
and taking trips to local casinos and to Nevada with her sister, Allie, brother, Bill and niece, Gayle and her husband.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; her brother, Bill Brown; three sisters: Elsie McDonald, Allie
Zirkle, and Wilma Hanshew; and her daughter-in-law, Ina Hess.

She is survived by her two children: Robert Hess of Milton-Freewater, Oregon and JoDee (John) Hanson of Olympia,
Washington; two grandsons: John, Jr. (AnneMarie) Hanson and Bill (Janey) Hanson; two step-grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren;
six step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2011, at Mountain View Cemetery, 2120 S. 2nd Avenue,
Walla Walla, Washington. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551
Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
