Driver in surgical boot crashes into Urgent Care

WALLA WALLA -- A driver wearing a surgical boot on his foot confused the accelerator with the brake Monday and drove his vehicle into the Walla Walla Urgent Care Center.

No major injuries were reported in the 9:50 a.m. crash. One passenger in the vehicle reported neck pain, but no further information was available.

Police say Martin Ayala Trujillo, 40, of Isaacs Avenue, was not supposed to have been driving while wearing the boot, which was on his right foot and lower leg. The device caused him to confuse the brake and gas pedals as he attempted to park a 2000 Dodge Caravan in front of the clinic, 380 Chase St., the report said.

The vehicle lunged forward, rolling over the parking barriers, across the lawn and into the building with "significant intrusion," authorities said.

A hospital official was not immediately available this morning to detail the extent of the damage at the property. Ayala Trujillo was cited for second-degree negligent driving.
