Wa-Hi football gets blown out by Chiawana

Riverhawks RB Jordan Downing rushes for 238 yards and QB Joey Zamora throws four touchdowns in the rout.

PASCO - Fourth-ranked Chiawana scored touchdowns on five of six first-half possessions and amassed 517 yards of offense during a 56-24 victory over Wa-Hi in Big Nine 4A football action Friday night at Edgar Brown Stadium.

Running back Jordan Downing rushed for 238 yards - 214 of which came in the first half - and quarterback Joey Zamora threw four touchdown passes as the defending league champions improved to 2-0 in the Big Nine and 4-0 overall.

The Blue Devils are now 0-2 and 0-4.

"They're ranked No. 4 for a reason," Wa-Hi coach Eric Hisaw said.

Chiawana established a 14-0 lead by the five-minute mark of the first quarter after scoring drives of 74 and 65 yards. Downing ended the first possession with a 5-yard run and Zamora hit Miquiyah Zamora with a 42-yard pass to bring the latter drive to a successful end.

Wa-Hi cut the Riverhawks' lead to seven, 14-7, when Jonah Hoe ended a 79-yard, 10-play march with a 10-yard scamper at the 1:25 mark of period one. Hoe ended the evening with 115 yards on 22 totes.

The teams combined to put 31 points on the board in the second quarter. The Zamora-to-Zamora combination clicked from 27 yards away with 10:43 on the clock, Wa-Hi's Dean Atkinson booted at 40-yard field goal at the 7:34 mark, and Downing galloped across the goal line from 6 yards out with 4:39 left to bring the tally to 28-10.

Wa-Hi's Gabe Porter picked off a Joey Zamora pass in the left flat and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown with 48 seconds to go to make it a 28-17 game.

But Chiawana got the last laugh of the half. Joey Zamora connected with C.J. Edrington for a 28-yard scoring toss with 19 seconds remaining to give the Riverhawks a 35-17 lead at halftime.

"That really hurt," Hisaw said. "That's been a microcosm of our season. We make a big play to get back in the game, then we shoot ourselves in the foot."

Downing produced the only touchdown of the third quarter by stepping in front of a toss by Wa-Hi quarterback Dakota Turner at the Blue Devil 22 yard-line and taking the interception into the end zone with 4:32 on the clock. That increased the Riverhawks' margin to 25, 42-17.

"We didn't play poorly in the third quarter," Hisaw said. "We went toe-to-toe."

Backup running back Terro Bell, who ran for 89 yards on 17 carries, scored on a 2-yard run with 4:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to grow the Chiawana lead to 32 points, 49-17.

Turner and Blake Rowley teamed up for a 4-yard throw-and-grab with 1:55 to go that resulted in Wa-Hi's final points of the night.

Chiawana drove 65 yards for the game's final score after a Blue Devil onside kick bounced out of bounds. Joey Zamora, under heavy pressure, found Edrington - who outleaped a Wa-Hi defender - for a 28-yard touch with 17 seconds left.

Turner completed 10-of-17 passes for 161 yards. Hoe and Rowley caught three passes apiece and Moe Handcox added two for a team-high 70 yards.

"I'm not going to fault the effort at all," Hisaw said. "We're making strides. We need to keep fighting."
