WALLA WALLA -- Walla Walla Police today are investigating a stabbing at the Washington State Penitentiary.

Prison spokeswoman Shari Hall said the attack occurred about 8 p.m. on Monday in the day room of one of the four close-custody units in the prison's West Complex.

According to police, the suspect, Daniel Johnson, 30, allegedly assaulted a second prisoner, Virgil Morgan, 28, stabbing him numerous times with a makeshift weapon.

Hall said other inmates were present in the day room when the assault occurred, but did not take part in the fight.

Morgan was taken to a local medical facility for treatment and is expected to be returned to the prison today.

Johnson has been placed in segregation pending an investigation by police and Department of Corrections officials.

The unit where the assault occurred is on restricted movement status today, but the rest of the prison was operating normally, Hall said.
