MILTON-FREEWATER - The Mac-Hi boys soccer team put a hurting on visiting Pendleton Tuesday, routing the Buckaroos 6-0 as the Saldana brothers combined for three goals - four, including the unrelated Alex Saldana.
The Pioneers scored two goals in the first quarter, but exploded with four more in the second half.
"Actually we did kind of struggle to find a rhythm in the first half, and putting the ball in the net as well," Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. "We got Robert Sandoval, a senior, back from injury and he has really opened the game up by passing the ball really well.
"He's really smart, he knows how to pass the ball," Garcia said.
Goal one came from Luis Saldana on an assist by Roberto Sandoval. Alex Saldana tapped in the next and final goal of the first half and the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead into the second half.
Christian Torres scored an unassisted goal to open the half, and then Roberto Sandoval added one more on a penalty kick when Torres was slide tackled.
Salvador Saldana added two more goals in the final half.
"I was happy with how we played today," Garcia said. "Everyone got more loose and we moved really easily without the ball, which made it easier to create open spaces and score."
The win puts Mac-Hi at 4-0 on the season, but Garcia said he is expecting the Pioneers to improve even more.
"I was kind of expecting this because we were not playing very good," Garcia said. "Hopefully (after this win) they got the picture and we'll start playing like we're supposed to."
Mac-Hi travels to Ontario Saturday at 2 p.m.
