A public meeting is scheduled for 6 tonight in Bldg. 78 at The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center.

The topic of discussion is the proposed use of certain historic officers' quarters to house homeless veterans or other appropriate housing programs.

The concept is part of the VA's Enhanced Use Lease plan to use sections of the VA campus that are currently under-utilized.

The VA may also consider retail, office or commercial use of the space to help support housing programs in those buildings, which are in need of considerable repair, officials said.

Tonight's meeting, notice of which was published in classified newspaper ads, is to give people a chance to comment on possible uses of the officers' quarters, which are on the National Historic Register, noted Linda Wondra, Walla Walla VA spokeswoman.

The national VA is looking for the right person or agency to establish a housing program and then manage it, she said.
