SPOKANE - Little did the Spokane Sasquatch realize when they assumed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning here Sunday, it would be the high point of their day.
After a scoreless second inning, Walla Walla rallied for four runs in the top of the third and then swept away the Sasquatch 8-1 and 15-1 in a showdown for first place in the NWAACC Eastern Region softball standings.
The teams entered the twin bill, which had been rained out on Friday, with identical 6-0 division records after posting sweeps on Saturday. The Warriors hammered Big Bend 23-1 and 9-0 in Moses Lake and Spokane whitewashed Columbia Basin 5-0 and 6-0 here in Spokane.
But Sunday's big battle never materialized as some might have expected thanks to sophomore right-hander Dara Kosanke, who pitched both games for the Warriors and allowed just two runs on 11 hits over 12 innings. The second game was stopped after five frames via the mercy rule.
WWCC's offense, meanwhile, piled up 15 hits in each game as the Warriors improved to 8-0 in league games and 16-2 overall. The 13-time East champion Sasquatch slipped to 6-2 in the division and 11-6 on the year.
Kosanke did her part with the bat as well with two hits in the first game, including a double, and two doubles and a single in the nightcap.
Jill McDaniels, Katie Martell, Brandy Knowles, Kate Hawk and Mercedes Pearson also had a pair of hits each in the first game for the Warriors. Knowles and Pearson belted triples and Sami Verity contributed a double.
Kelsey Locke slammed her third home run of the season in the second game for WWCC and added a pair of singles. Alicia Baker contributed three singles, Hawk added a double and a single and McDaniels chipped in a pair of base hits.
Walla Walla continues to play on the road this weekend with two games against Blue Mountain in Pendleton Friday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader against Treasure Valley on Saturday at noon. Spokane plays at Wenatchee Friday and at Yakima on Saturday.
