MISSION, Ore. - DeSales eighth grader Emily Baumgart earned top honors at the Wildhorse Invite here Monday, firing an 87 on the par-72 course.
Baumgart started out 8-over after two holes, and then shot 7-over on the next 16 to medal.
"For an eighth grader to come back like that... she could have just thrown in the towel," Irish coach Lon Olson said.
On the boys side, DeSales' Ryan Baumgart finished second with a 4-under 68, behind Southridge's Nick Mandell, who shot 7-under 65.
Ryan Baumgart carded six birdies in the round, Olson said.
Nine boys varsity teams were in attendance, and seven girls' squads participated.
Other counting scores for the Irish boys were Jerod Konen with a 75, good for eighth place; Scott Kimball at 81; and Bryce Scott at 86. DeSales finished third in the team standings with a 310, behind Hanford's 302 and Southridge's 305.
Non-counting for DeSales was Lucas Lyons' 93.
On the girls side, Emily Baumgart was followed by teammates Ashton Montgomery at 117 and Alyssa Lyons at 155.
Hermiston won girls team score at 435, followed by The Dalles-Wahtonka 436 and Pendleton 451.
Waitsburg-Prescott's Dakota Baker shot an 89 on his first time playing the Wildhorse course, Olson said.
DeSales next heads to Milton-Freewater Municipal for the Mac-Hi Invitational at noon Friday.
