WALLA WALLA -- One unit at the Washington State Penitentiary remained on restricted movement this morning after a large fight Tuesday.

Corrections officers used pepper spray to break up the fight, which broke out at 5:35 p.m. in a commons areas of Golf Unit, one of prison's four West Complex close-custody units.

The fight started between two inmates, but escalated until 14 prisoners were involved.

Officers were able to secure the unit in less than a minute after using pepper spray.

No prisoners or staff members were injured.

Prison spokeswoman Shari Hall said the inmates involved were placed in segregation pending an investigation. Movement is restricted in the area of the unit where the fight took place, but the remainder of the prison is operating normally.

The close-custody units are the prison's second-highest custody level. The penitentiary houses more than 2,000 inmates in minimum, close and maximum-custody units.
