Egil Summers, Jr.
May 11, 1927 - April 2, 2012

Egil Summers Jr. of Clarkston, a former U.S. Army Corps of Engineer employee, died April 2, 2012, in Arlington, Wash., at age 84 from complications related to diabetes. Prior to his brief residence in Arlington, he resided in Clarkston and Yuma, Ariz., depending on the season.

Egil was born May 11, 1927, to Egil Sr. and Isabel Summers in Chicago, where he resided for three years. During this time, he recalls attending the Chicago World's Fair and being lost! He moved to Muscatine, Iowa, in childhood and later to Denison, Texas, where he attended high school.

Egil attended Texas AM University until he was inducted in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. After Army discharge he returned to Texas and then moved in 1947 to Garrison, N.D., where he met the love of his life, Phyllis Jacobson, whom he married in 1950. He started his lifetime employment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at this time and spent the next 13 years working on defense missile sites as a project engineer in various locations throughout South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. His two sons, Kevin and Steven, were born during this time. Egil and his family relocated to Walla Walla in the late 1960s and then to Clarkston in the early 1970s. At this time he worked on Snake River Dam construction as a chief inspector and later on the levees and bridges that are so prominent in the Lewiston-Clarkston area. Egil enjoyed gardening, boating, R.V. living, bicycle riding and walks with friends and family. He had a fondness for dogs. He liked people and would frequently open up conversations spontaneously with strangers.

Egil is survived by his two sons and their wives, Kevin and Beverly Summers of Stanwood, Wash., and Steven and Michelle Summers of Anchorage, Alaska. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Lauren, Ryan and Michael Summers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Phyllis; and his three sisters, Eulabelle Branson, Marguerite Easton and Sarah Corcoran.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. April 14, 2012, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1115 13th St., in Clarkston. Phone: 509-758-7751. Presiding Pastor: Ole Gunderson.

Arrangements are being handled by Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Memorial donations may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church. The family wishes to thank the church, friends and neighbors, as well as the Corps of Engineers for the fulfilling life Egil experienced. Egil was a gregarious, warm and loving father and will be greatly missed.
