DAYTON - Mental mistakes and a costly injury spelled the first defeat of the season for the Dayton baseball team Saturday.
The Bulldogs lost game one 14-6 and recovered to win the nightcap, 12-11.
"We didn't keep track of how many outs there were on offense and defense several times during the first game," Dayton coach Sal Benavides said. "On offense, we didn't know how many outs there were and got into unnecessary double plays because we stopped running. On defense, the catcher rolled the ball out onto the field with the bases loaded and headed for the dugout with only two outs."
The Bulldogs also suffered an injury to their leadoff hitter and top pitcher in the second inning of first game. Colton Bickelhaupt slid at home and hurt his back.
Bickelhaupt was just returning from a dislocated shoulder.
The Bulldogs were able to recover from a game one loss, to win 12-11 in game two with ten hits.
Dayton's Joey Schlacter had two hits in each game.
The Bulldogs' Lowden Smith added four hits, with three coming in the second game.
The Bulldogs (2-0, 5-1) play again Tuesday when they host Touchet.
