MILTON-FREEWATER - The defending Oregon state 4A golf champions proved they are ready to defend their state title here at the Milton-Freewater course in non-conference boys golf action Friday.
La Grande took the team title with a score of 283 to defeat the home-standing and runner-up Mac-Hi contingent by 23 strokes. Baker was next with 308, and Desales, without Ryan Baumgart and Jerod Konen, came home with a 327.
The Tigers' Daniel Semore medaled with a 68 on the par 60 course. La Grande's Mavric Goss followed his teammate home with a 69.
Ryan Bullock and Andrew Kain led the Pioneers as both finished with 74s. Lucas Simpson shot 78, Mike Miller posted a 79, and Rain Wheeler posted a non-team-scoring 80.
"We averaged 26 shots over par in our first match," Mac-Hi coach Barry Wofford said. "We were 19 shots over in our second match and 16 over today (Friday). We're improving. None of our guys felt good with what they shot (Friday). That attitude shows they really want to get better."
For DeSales, Bryce Scott led the way with a 76. Scott Kimball carded an 80. Lucas Lyons shot an 84, and Robert Kelly and Daniel Schaefer both finished with round of 87.
Dakota Baker competed for Waitsburg-Prescott and shot a 74.
On the girls' side, DeSales Emily Baumgart and La Grande's Terry Wallace tied with 78s. Baumgart won on the first hole of sudden death with a par.
Mac-Hi and DeSales will be joined by Liberty Christian and Tri-Cities Prep for a match Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Walla Walla Veteran's Memorial course.
