SALEM - After losing just two games in a sweep of doubles, Whitman College cruised through singles with six straight-set wins to post a 9-0 Northwest Conference victory over Linfield Sunday morning in McMinnville, Ore.
Later in the day, Whitman ran its spring season winning streak to 18 with a 9-0 shutout victory over Willamette Sunday afternoon in Salem.
Whitman, No. 9 in the NCAA Division III national rankings, elevated its record to 11-0 in the Northwest Conference and 18-3 on the season. It can finish a sixth straight undefeated NWC season next Saturday when it hosts Lewis & Clark, a team it blanked 9-0 last month.
No. 1 in the West Region, Whitman has yet to lose to NCAA DIII team this season and has blanked nine of the 11 NWC teams it has played.
Whitman has already clinched a fifth straight conference title and the No. 1 seed in the NWC's post-season playoffs.
Even if Whitman loses its final regular season match to Lewis & Clark, and Pacific wins its final two matches, the two teams would finish tied for first at 11-1. They would share the NWC title but Whitman would get the No. 1 playoff seed based on its 7-2 victory over the Boxers earlier this season.
After sweeping Willamette in doubles on Sunday for a 3-0 lead, Whitman rested two of its top players in singles but still ran the table for its second 9-0 victory of the day.
Conor Holton-Burke, who has bounced between the top three singles spots this spring, rallied for a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 victory over Joshua Wong in the No. 1 slot.
Sam Sadeghi, who has played much of the season at No. 5 singles, jumped into the No. 2 slot, where he outlasted Cody Ferguson 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 in another competitive battle.
James Rivers got the win at No. 3 singles, beating Vincent Garrett 6-0, 6-3 to boost his singles record to 15-3 on the season.
Adriel Borshansky won his 17th straight singles match, beating Will Cooper 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot.
Steven Roston rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Will Agnew-Svoboda at No. 5 singles, and Matt Tesmond won 6-1, 7-5 over Jack Schreiber at No. 6.
The most competitive match in the opening doubles came at No. 1, where Holton-Burke and Tesmond scrambled past Wong and Ferguson 8-4.
Rivers and Andrew La Cava won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Sadeghi and Roston won by the same score at the No. 3 spot.
Earlier Sunday, Holton-Burke and Tesmond got the win at No. 1 doubles against Linfield, rolling 8-2 over Cody Levien and Micah Roos.
The rest of doubles was no contest as La Cava and Rivers were 8-0 winners at No. 2, while Roston and Colton Malesovas won by the same score at No. 3.
Tesmond came back in singles for a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 slot. Roston was almost perfect at No. 5, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Borshansky continued his near perfect season (just one loss) with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kadin Hashimoto at No. 4 singles.
La Cava won the featured match at No. 1 singles, beating Roos 6-3, 6-3. Holton-Burke won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Rivers completed the sweep at No. 3 singles, building a 6-2, 3-0 lead before his opponent, Tyler Day, retired because of injury.
Whitman plays two matches Saturday, hosting Lewis & Clark at 10 a.m. and playing Lewis-Clark State later in the afternoon in Lewiston.
