POMEROY - Brothers Jake and Josh Straughan turned in stellar pitching performances here Tuesday and Colton's bats provided plenty of offensive support as the Wildcats swept a Southeast 1B District baseball doubleheader from Pomeroy, 11-1 and 23-0.
Both games were called after five innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
Jake Straughan, a senior, scattered seven hits, struck out nine and walked just one Pirate over his five-inning stint. The Pirates scored their only run of the game - and the day - in the bottom of the fifth inning when Matt FitzGerald tripled and Eric Wade followed with a single, his second hit of the game.
In the nightcap, sophomore Josh Straughan limited Pomeroy to just three hits while strikeout out 10 and walking two.
"Their pitching was outstanding," Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said. "Only three walks between them and 19 strikeouts, they were pretty overpowering."
So were the Wildcat hitters as they pounded out 27 hits on the day, including 17 in the second game.
"It was pretty amazing," Boyer said. "It didn't seem to matter where we played, they hit it where we weren't."
Jake Straughan helped his own cause in the first game with a triple, a double and a single, driving in two runs and scoring once. Bricyn Abdul and Matt Becker added two singles each.
Josh Straughan came up with two of Colton's 17 hits in the second game. But Abdul did the most damage with a two-run home run in the first inning, a two-run single in the second, an RBI triple in the third and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth.
Becker had three singles in the second game for Colton, giving him five hits on the day. Casey Jackson contributed three singles in the second game and Justin Meyers smacked a pair of doubles.
Ryan Smith hit a triple and Kade Snyder and Bryan McGreevy singled to account for Pomeroy's three hits in the nightcap.
The Pirates' season record is now 2-6 and they are 0-2 in league play. Pomeroy travels to Grangeville, Idaho, Saturday for a pair of non-league games beginning at 11 a.m.
