PRESCOTT - Waitsburg-Prescott struck for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning here late Tuesday afternoon to defeat Riverside 15-10 and salvage the second game of a non-league prep softball doubleheader.
The visiting Pirates won the first game 9-8, pushing across the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
The split leaves W-P with a 6-2 record heading into a Saturday home doubleheader against league rival Dayton.
Waitsburg-Prescott is 3-1 in Southeast 2B District play.
Three walks started W-P's big fifth inning in the nightcap. Samantha Moss delivered a two-run triple later in the inning to tie the game at 10-10 and then scored what proved to be the winning run on Hailey Goenen's sharp single to center field.
Moss and Chelsey Brannock had two hits each in the second game and four apiece on the day for W-P. Goenen had a pair of hits in the opener and three overall and Dionna Baker slammed a grand slam home run to ignite a five-run W-P rally in the fourth inning of the first game.
"The first game seemed pretty long and the second game was headed in that direction," W-P coach Angie Potts said. "There was a lot of hitting going on.
"Their pitcher in the second game wasn't quite as effective so that didn't work in their favor."
