Walla Walla man pleads guilty to two rapes

Joshua A. Rutherford faces 26-34 months in prison for crimes in 2009 and 2010.

— A local man has pleaded guilty in Superior Court to two rape charges for crimes that occurred in 2009 and 2010.

Joshua A. Rutherford, 19, entered a guilty plea Monday to a third-degree rape charge for having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl without her consent in the summer of 2009.

He also pleaded guilty to third-degree rape of a child for having sex in the summer of 2010 with a girl who was 14 years old.

Both of the crimes -- which hadn't been reported to police until last spring -- took place at a residence in the area of the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds, according to police.

Rutherford was acquainted with both of the girls, officials said.

He faces a standard-range prison term of 26-34 months when he's sentenced later. The prosecution is recommending a midrange, 30-month sentence in exchange for his guilty pleas.

He has been incarcerated at the County Jail since Aug. 16.
