Racing the rain

Determined Blue Devil Blake Gerling flies to the win in the boy's 110-meter hurdles Thursday afternoon at Martin Field.

Caught in a cloud burst during the second heat of the boys 100-meter dash, Wa-Hi's Billy Palmer races the rain and three trailing Eastmont sprinters Thursday afternoon at Martin Field.

Wa-Hi's track and field team hosted Eastmont for a non-scoring meet at Martin Field Thursday. Blue Devil coach Eric Hisaw said an absolute downpour drenched the meet before the weather cleared, and then another hit later in the event.

No team scores were compiled in the meet, as participants competed to qualify for Saturday's Pasco Invite.

About 45 Wa-Hi athletes are attending the Invite, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium and runs into the evening.

More than 100 schools are competing at what is considered one of the largest high school track meets, Hisaw said.

"We're going to go and be competitive," he said.
