DIXIE - Dixie Elementary students were painting the town red Friday.

And blue. And green. And yellow.

Students took to the street to decorate nine of the town's fire hydrants with colorful designs, using paints donated by Home Depot and Joanne Hesser-James, a Dixie Water Board member.

"I just thought it would be a good idea to dress up the hydrants and it would be fun for the students," Hesser-James said. It is hoped the project will also help make the hydrants more visible to firefighters.

The students drew up designs for the hydrants and water board members and school staff looked them over to narrow the ideas down to nine finalists.

Then on Friday the students, kindergarten through fifth grade, fanned out to find the hydrants assigned to them and get to painting.

"Just a little something to give Dixie a little flair," Hesser-James said in an email.
