PASCO - The Wa-Hi Blue Devils' boys placed seventh overall in a meet consisting of more than 100 teams at the Pasco Invite Saturday.
"It was a really good showing by the boys," Wa-Hi coach Eric Hisaw said. "If everything had gone as planned, we could have finished in the top five as a boys' team."
The girls finished in about the middle of the pack, tied for 28th.
Blake Gerling led the boys with a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles (38.75) and a fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.76). Gerling now holds the best time in the 300 hurdles in any classification this year in the state of Washington.
"Blake (Gerling) really had an outstanding meet," Hisaw said. "He has had a lifetime best in both hurdles events today."
For the girls, Madeline Jacobson finished the highest for Wa-Hi at sixth in the javelin (125-05).
"Madeline (Jacobson) really threw well today," Hisaw said. "I know she would have liked to do even better but she is gaining confidence and getting better."
Scoring points on the podium for Wa-Hi was four different relay teams, two for the girls and two for the boys.
The top eight in each event score points for the team at this meet.
The 4X400 relay boys of Kyle Jameson, Gerling, Greggory Heller and Ben Wolpert finished sixth with a time of 3:31.68.
In the boys' distance medley, Sean Hollenbeck, Heller, Ty Hafen and Wolpert grabbed fourth with a time of 10:42.38.
The girls' 4X400 ran to a fifth place (4:12.02) with Dominque Cox, Sarai Seekamp, Brittany Gibbar and Ashley Cornia.
The distance medley girls' team of Hannah Hampson, Courtney Cox, Seekamp and Jocelyn Vargas took seventh (13:08.74).
For the girls, Maggie Callan scored a personal best (PR) with a tenth place finish (60.86) in the 400 meters and Rachel Nelson had a PR in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.16.
For the boys, Hafen finshed with a PR of 2:02.48 in 800 meters. As a sophomore, Darnell Handcox had a PR at his event too, the triple jump (40-00.25.)
"It was a great meet for us," Hisaw said, "and it was nice to finally have some good weather."
Waitsburg-Prescott brought two competitors to the event, Eshom Estes and Seth Deal.
Deal set a personal record in the 3200 with a 9:58.9, good for 26th place.
Estes placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 50-10.5, which was half an inch off the W-P record.
"They earned the right to go there, and I feel really good about their performances," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said.
