WALLA WALLA - Richland swept singles play and also claimed the No. 1 doubles match Tuesday afternoon at Wa-Hi as the Bombers defeated the Blue Devils 5-2 in a Big Nine Conference boys tennis showdown.

Both teams entered the match with unblemished Big Nine records.

"This was a grand battle of the unbeatens," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said. "It was disappointing for the boys to experience their first loss of the season, but Richland is an excellent team.

"They certainly had greater strength in the top of their lineup," Cummings added of the Bombers. "But I thought we competed well throughout the majority of the matches. We need to manage our error-to-winner ratio much better, but that will come with time on the court."

Richland's Travis Zuroske topped Wa-Hi's Blake Rowley 6-2, 6-0 at first singles and Brett Myer and Taylor Armstrong of the Bombers teamed up for a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Blue Devils' James Tupper-Bridges and John Meliah at first doubles.

Wa-Hi collected its points in the next two doubles matches. Doug Rowley and Parker Postelwait upended Ed Jaffee and Wyatt Muntean 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles and Lane Dawes and Conner Christensen bested Brian Burke and James Graff 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

"Those two doubles teams displayed some late-season quality tennis in posting victories over two pretty tough teams," Cummings said.

Wa-Hi will host Moses Lake Thursday in another Big Nine dual match. Action is slated at 2 p.m.
