GARFIELD - Dayton's Samantha Harting hit home runs in both games here Tuesday as the Bulldogs pelted Garfield-Palouse 11-7 and 20-10 in a non-league prep softball doubleheader.
The second game was called after five innings when darkness and the 10-run mercy rule arrived simultaneously.
"We had already agreed that the fifth inning would be the last inning, and then we put up nine runs in the top of the fifth (for a 10-run lead)," Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones explained. "It was getting pretty cold and pretty dark."
Harting homered to lead off the fourth inning in the first game. She also doubled home a run in the seventh inning and pitched a complete game.
Harting blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning of the nightcap after McKayla Bickelhaupt had slugged a two-run homer in the second inning. Sarah Phillips led the Bulldogs' 14-hit offensive onslaught with three singles, bunting for one and beating out infield grounders for the other two.
"She's the quickest thing ever," Jones said of Phillips.
Harting, Bickelhaupt and Lexie Ramirez had two hits each in the second game.
Dayton improved to 7-5 on the season and takes a 4-2 Southeast 2B District mark into Thursday's 3 p.m. home doubleheader against DeSales. The Irish enter the twin bill with a 2-0 district record.
